3 Best Hiking Trails Around Aspen

Nothing beats lacing up your boots and going for a hike in the crisp autumn air. Whether you’re looking for an easy excursion or a serious workout, we’ve got you covered. Consider this your go-to guide for hiking in and around Aspen.

Maroon Bells Scenic Trail (Easy)

As the name suggests, Maroon Bells is a picturesque place complete with flowers, a lake, and Aspen trees. Billed as a short, easy 1.5-mile hike, it’s the perfect choice for anyone who isn’t a serious hiker. However, the payoff is well worth it: once you get to the lookout, you’ll see expansive views of the surrounding wilderness, mountains, and lake. If you’re ready for an additional adventure, you can continue along the Maroon Creek Trail for a couple more miles until you reach a pathway that overlooks Maroon Bells and Pyramid Peak.

Smuggler Mountain Trail (Moderate)

Billed as one of the most popular hiking trails in Aspen, the Smuggler Mountain Trail is well-suited for hikers of all ages and skill levels. Simply mosey along a dirt road with a half dozen switchbacks that lead to an overlook with an observation deck. The moderate three-mile hike has an elevation of around 800 feet. Hikers can also go mountain biking or bird watching there. Be sure to pack some granola bars and water bottles so you can stay sustained and hydrated along the way.

Ute Trail (Difficult)

If you’re looking for a true workout, this is it. The Ute Trail is a steep, somewhat treacherous hike that leads up a steep incline to a rocky overlook. Rated as difficult, the approximately three-mile hike has an elevation of 1,700 feet. You may need to stop once or twice to catch your breath, but the payoff will be well worth it: once you reach the rocky outcropping at the top of the mountain, you can see panoramic views of Aspen below. Best of all? The trail is dog-friendly, so you can bring your pooch along for the outing.
