Here are just a few of the can’t-miss events happening in Aspen this winter.
1. World Snow Polo Championships (December 17-20, 2018)
For the sixth year in a row, Aspen Valley Polo Club owners Melissa and Marc Ganzi will host the star-studded World Snow Polo Championships with polo ambassador and St. Regis Connoisseur Nacho Figueras and his wife Delfina. This is a don’t-miss in the Aspen social scene.
2. Newsies: The Musical at Aspen District Theatre (Thursday - Sunday, January 10-13, 2019)
Don’t miss this talented young cast from Theatre Aspen’s Winter Conservatory as they bring this classic Disney musical of newsboys and labor battles to life in a limited five-performance run. This thrilling and action-packed show is heavy on dance and is appropriate for all ages, making it a perfect choice for the whole family.
3. Wintersköl (Thursday - Sunday, January 10-13, 2019)
Grab your buckets and snow shovels! Aspen’s best snow sculpture event happens January 10-13th on the Aspen pedestrian mall as part of the largest Winterskol activities. Four days of celebrations across town include sculptures, fireworks, an evening torchlight descent on Aspen Mountain, a canine fashion show, apres ski parties, and more!
4. Aspen Gay Ski Week (January 13-20, 2019)
The oldest annual week-long gay ski event in the nation, Aspen Gay Ski Week (AGSW) offers a unique vacation experience in the scenic and historic landscape of Aspen. Visitors can enjoy Aspen’s four mountains of varied skiing and snowboarding terrain and a schedule filled with social events. From dance parties to film events, fashion shows to comedy nights, there’s no denying this is one of Aspen’s premier events.
5. Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo at Aspen District Theatre (Saturday, January 19, 2019)
The dance troupe known as “The Trocks” are back, and they’re bringing their all-male ballet to the Aspen District Theatre. This popular touring troupe starring men in tutus pokes fun at the traditions of ballet. The performance is equal parts physical comedy and astounding technique. Far from your traditional ballet, this performance promises to be the dance event of the winter.
6. The 2019 X Games Aspen (January 24-17, 2019)
The X Games return to Aspen in 2019. All of the sporting competitions are free and open to the public with musical performances by Lil Wayne, Louis the Child, The Chainsmokers and more. Get ready to spend time alongside some of the most talented winter athletes on Colorado’s Buttermilk Mountain!
7. Lil Wayne at X Games Aspen, Buttermilk Ski Area (Friday, January 25, 2019) and Belly Up Aspen (Saturday, January 26, 2019)
You’ve no doubt heard of Lil Wayne. The New Orleans hip-hop mogul is still riding the release of his long-awaited The Carter V and is bringing his show to the mountains for two of the largest concerts of the year. Lil Wayne will headline the outdoor arena at the X Games Friday night to more than 6,000 (very cold) fans before performing a more intimate show at Belly Up downtown on Saturday night.
8. Jennifer Koh at Aspen Music Festival and School, Harris Concert Hall (Thursday, February 7, 2019)
This world-renowned violinist has conceived an innovative four-part concert series, Bridge to Beethoven, that brings Beethoven’s works into the modern age by pairing them with contemporary compositions that were inspired by his classes. In this rendition, Koh will pair Beethoven’s famous Opus 30 violin sonatas with newly-commissioned pieces by Andrew Norman.
9. Colson Whitehead at Aspen Winter Words, Paepcke Auditorium (Tuesday, February 12, 2019)
News that Whitehead was working on his new novel set off a media frenzy earlier this year, proving his place in current culture. Whitehead’s acclaimed 2016 novel The Underground Railroad won a Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, solidifying Whitehead’s place as a great generational talent in literature. Attend the Winter Words series throughout the winter season.
10. Jim Gaffigan at Wheeler Opera House (Friday, February 15, 2019)
The Wheeler House continues to step up, bringing in top-notch headliners and supporting acts that rival any comedy festivals on earth over the past couple of years. However, no one is bigger than the famed Jim Gaffigan, who will headline at this historic theater the weekend leading up to Laugh Fest 2019. Gaffigan is known for being one of the funniest and most popular comedians in the world and regularly performs at large venues. If you’re lucky enough to score tickets to this one, you won’t want to miss it.
