From Smuggler to Snowmass: Which Aspen Community is Right For You?

The ultimate guide to the perfect neighborhood for you

It’s not just people that have distinct personalities: places do too. That’s why it’s important to research which qualities a neighborhood embodies as well as the things to do, and determine whether you can see yourself and your family there. We’ve rounded up what you need to know about each Aspen community to give you a head start.

This charming, historic neighborhood is known for its mix of old and new homes, and even more notably for its panoramic, majestic views of Aspen Mountain. Named after one of the oldest coal mines, it’s a walkable distance to downtown Aspen. If you like to stay busy with things to do, there are excellent dining options, galleries, and shopping opportunities. Into the arts? See a show at the Wheeler Opera House or Belly Up.

West Aspen

With tons of family-friendly recreation and activities, West Aspen is a place where many love to settle down. It has an old touch yet it is upscale, with an affinity for natural beauty. The area is full of a dynamic array of housing, from townhouses and duplexes to single-family homes and country estates. If you like a close-up view of water features and beautiful landscape you’ll love it here; many of these homes are situated along the Roaring Fork River and Aspen Public Golf Course.

East Aspen

If you prefer to be more secluded and consider yourself private, East Aspen is the way to go. It’s surrounded by the tranquility of the mountains and the woods, but is not a far bike ride or drive to downtown, or even one of the four major ski areas. The single-family homes here are complete with massive yards, and have peaceful parks and trails nearby.

Central Core

Central Core is optimal for those who like a small town feel with big city activity. This neighborhood is full of culture and is considered downtown due to its colorful personality and central placement at the base of Aspen mountain. If you’re an adventure-seeker, arts lover, or foodie — this area could be the one for you. Plus, you’ll love the views from the luxury penthouses and condominiums, as well as the modern single-family homes and townhouses!

Mclain Flats and Woody Creek

Mclain Flats is an expansive plateau turned sweet country neighborhood. The prestigious neighborhood is brimming with large, beautiful houses in acclaimed subdivisions. You’ll find majestic acreage and vast pastures surrounding homes built with the gorgeous views of the mountains in mind. It’s further from downtown than the others, but the scenic drive is worth it.  Woody Creek is similar in its rustic character and solitary charm. For those looking to raise a family and enjoy a country lifestyle, this could be the neighborhood for you.

West End

The distinguished and esteemed neighborhood is hugged by wide, tree-lined streets, historic houses, and delightful gardens. Architecture fans love living here and taking in its structural beauty. You’ll find vibrant Victorian homes throughout the area, and appreciate the suburban aesthetic.

Snowmass Village

This breathtaking Snowmass village is made for outdoor lovers. There are a satisfying number of trails and parks, so be ready to stroll, hike and mountain bike in every season. The proximity to Snowmass mountain is a huge benefit to those who live in the area, and you’ll find that many take advantage of the closeness to nature, the famed ski resort, and the Snowmass Village Recreation Center. The dining and pub scene is also great. The aesthetic of this quaint little town resembles the coziness and intimacy of a ski resort.
